Mouawad Jewelers: A Modern Company With a Rich History
Date: 23 December 2002

Mouawad, a name well known to Europeans for haute joaillierie, is as celebrated for its extensive collection of unique diamonds as its cutting-edge design and retail philosophy. Founded in 1890 by master watchmaker and family patriarch David Mouawad, the company supplied important jewels to many European royal houses and wealthy individuals. Today Mouawad continues that tradition in a modern way by adorning the necks, ears and wrists of today's "royalty" -- supermodels, singers, actresses and women of style from across the globe.

A World-Class Cache of Diamonds: Mouawad is known to have purchased the world's largest private collection of diamonds, including several historically important diamonds such as the Jubilee, a 245.35 cts E-VVS2 cushion shape diamond, ranked as the sixth largest diamond in the world; the137.02 carat D-Flawless Premier Rose, the second largest pear shaped diamond in the world; the Queen of Holland, a magnificent 135.92 D-Internally Flawless cushion shape diamond; the famed Taylor-Burton, a 69.42 cts D-Internally Flawless pear shaped diamond once given by Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor; and the Excelsior, a G VS-2, 69.68 carat pear shape diamond that is the largest cut from the biggest rough diamond ever discovered.

The Power of Love: Mouawad, in collaboration with eleven of the world's most celebrated diamond houses has created spectacular statement pieces of jewelry for the new exhibit, Diamonds and the Power of Love. This breathtaking new exhibit focuses on diamonds as being a grand symbol of love and commitment, and showcases jewelry from as early as the 8th century to the 21st century. The exhibit first opened in Japan at the Hakone Open Air Museum in September, and is scheduled to make its U.S. debut in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day 2003. The show will feature original, yet exquisite diamond rings, pendants and other unique pieces that best represents the love in a couple's past, present and future.

Celebrity Style: With its magnificent collection of rare jewelry, it's no surprise that celebrities clamor to wear Mouawad at premiers, award ceremonies, personal appearances, and of course, for magazine shoots. Recently, dazzling diva Britney Spears chose to wear Mouawad jewelry at the premier of her movie Crossroads. To celebrate the release of the biggest movie of the summer, Spiderman, supermodel Jody Kidd wore Mouawad's "spider inspired" jewelry for the occasion. Actresses Julienne Davis, Liz Hurley and Kate Winslet have also been spotted at special events sparkling in Mouawad diamonds. For the second year in a row Mouawad joined forces with Victoria's Secret to create the perfect diamond accessories for the runway, featuring stars like Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum. This list will surely grow as Mouawad continues to expand in the United States.

A New Type of Jewelry for a New Type of Woman: The Signature collection was created to offer a ready-to-wear option for women of style who might not have occasion to wear the major gemstones for which Mouawad is so well known. Instead, these women can wear and enjoy Mouawad jewelry on a daily basis by choosing pieces from one of the many Mouawad collections. The Signature styles are composed of three unique collections: Rosette is characterized by rose-cut diamonds set against a background of gray rhodium. Aspen is inspired by nature with each piece sculpted to resemble a branch one might find in the forest. Verona's sleek channel-set diamonds complement the contemporary, architecturally angled curves of this collection. The most recent designs added to the Mouawad collection are Portofino and Links and Pearls. Portofino and Links and Pearls both feature the exquisite combination of cultured pearls and diamonds. Portofino, Italy's "Pearl of the Mediterranean", inspired this series of diamonds and cultured pearls, placed in 18k white gold. Links and Pearls is a simple and elegant blend of diamonds and fine cultured pearls with 18-karat yellow and white gold. Mouawad's collections are found at select Neiman Marcus stores nationwide or are available by special order by calling 1-866-MOUAWAD.
